My husband and I just celebrated our four year anniversary this past May. And while no relationship is perfect (or even close to it), one of the things my husband and I seemed to have nailed is our finances. Looking back, it wasn’t always like this. While our views were never on completely opposite ends of the spectrum, we’ve both learned a thing or two from each other along the way.
How to talk finances with your spouse
When John and I were dating, we sat down and had an honest discussion about our financial history. This included all of our individual current debts and our credit history. While neither of our situations were great, it opened the doors to improving our finances and working together as a team.
At the time, we were both in credit card debt. We committed to putting all of our extra money toward our debt. Our finances weren’t yet combined, but we were each other’s biggest fans. We held each other accountable and regularly asked how the other person was doing. We both had our credit cards paid off in full within five months.
